Ariel Atom 4 Launch - Print - Web - Email - Apparel - Vehicle Wrap - Ariel North America Atom 4 Launch Ariel Motors is an automotive brand that has been around since 1871 and has been around through many iterations from bicycles to motorcycles and finally high-end sports cars. Ariel’s pop culture claim to fame came about in 2004 when Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame had his face “destroyed” driving an Atom. Since then, Ariel has developed a healthy niche market filled with passionate enthusiasts. Fast forward to 2020 and it was time to introduce the Atom 4 to North America. I was approached with the task of “relaunching” the Ariel brand in North America. The Ariel brand has largely flown under the radar in the United States. The idea as to make the car more palatable to the US audience. The story: “No doors, no roof, no compromise” The main focus of the overall feel of the branding was bold and technical. This is a 3rd or 4th vehicle for potential owners. These owners focus on the numbers and engineering. All mechanics of an Atom are exposed and that’s what the buyers love. His airshow company needed a new identity. Having title sponsors with two completely different main colors was becoming a problem when it came to showing off his own brand. He also wanted more of a individual look to his brand which would separate the airshow team from his flight school. We had a few phone calls and brainstorming sessions before I presented him with three different design directions. North America US Launch I was introduced to the Ginetta team through some long time motorsport contacts. I was presented with a problem. “Historic U.K. race car manufacturer being brought into the U.S…. that almost no one in North America has heard of. By the way, we have no marketing assets and need to translate U.K marketing to the U.S. demographic.” A U.K. style guide was provided, but all images had to be sourced through U.S. photographers once the cars arrived from overseas. Myself, along with the small team were able to direct photographers and build up a library of images for print, digital, and social assets. The catalog, both in print and e-book was designed from scratch, while following the provided style guide. The idea was to highlight the basics of the car that most drivers would look for, but also present how we were different from other manufacturers. Ginetta provides a drivers’ experience unlike larger brands. The company's mission is to revolutionize the workwear industry by providing products that simplify the lives of workers. One way they achieve this is by offering high-quality products at a more affordable price point through direct-to-consumer sales, thereby eliminating the need for high retail store mark-ups. I was approached by BRUNT Workwear to develop a new landing page for their apparel line, which includes the Whitman pants, Martin pants, and shorts, as well as an email layout for their marketing campaign. The brand's message resonated with me, particularly as I have close friends in the trades, and I felt a natural connection with their look and voice. It started as a consumer packaging project for the Air Chek Radon Test Kit. Upon being onboarded, I directed the freelance artist through the first production run. While the design was clean, there were certain parts I wanted changed. “RADON” on the front of the packaging got lost with the background, the copy on the back was a bit hard to read and would run into issues during the print process. Also, I felt as though the front of the packaging needed to be simplified. Because the test was extremely easy to use, I wanted that noted on the front. Right in the middle of the second production run and redesign, Air Chek struck up a deal with both CVS and Walmart. PoP and PoS concept design was added to the design list. Beginning with the packaging, I was given a list of “must have” changes by the executive vice president. 1. Change the front tagline to “IS YOUR FAMILY SAFE? TEST YOUR HOME FOR RADON 2. More green 3. Call outs in red. 4. Add “ALL FEES INCLUDED” This presented a few problems from a branding perspective as the green and red went directly against our style guide. Green was worked into the first design in the same manner. It does offset the blue and white nicely, but the plan was to use it sparingly. Blue is the main color used in the Air Chek branding. The 2nd design followed with all the requested changes along with my changes. The back was made easier to read if the print went off, a simple set of instructions were added to the front, a white background was added to the “RADON STAMP” and the background image was changed out to a “happy” family. For the Walmart PoP, I was specifically given a sidekick to design from the Walmart design team. The design had to include the product name and a picture of the product. Design areas were the top header and both sides. The executive branch pushed for a fear based headline. Myself and the director of digital marketing, felt that this was a poor tactic and pushed for the simple tagline we had been using. “Have you tested your home?” I presented five different design options to the executive branch and ultimately, the very simple design with the tagline front and center and images flanking it were chosen. For the CVS PoP and PoS, I presented 3 different options, which were eventually canceled when CVS ordered less product than anticipated. Finally digital and print advertising followed. The tagline was adjusted slightly due to the pandemic, and most of the look and feel followed the packaging and the sidekick. The video started as a way to quickly give directions on how to preform the test. Script writing was left up to myself and Matt Hendrix who was the head of training. New Sky Productions carried out the actual filming and production, while the hiring of the VO artist / actress and also the direction and graphics were left up to myself. One such project was for a corporate presentation conceptualizing private label packaging for Aprilaire. These concept images were part of a bigger presentation created by the executive VP of Spruce. This project started with a list of products given to me by the executive VP that Aprilaire might be interested in private labeling. I was quite concerned creating concept art for a company without being provided their style guide. The only reference I had to work off of was Aprilaire’s website. The majority of the concept packaging was designed in Photoshop and Dimension. Aprilaire’s color palette was lifted from their website source code and content boxes were made to match. Typically, I commenced work on this catalog in September of the preceding year. My workflow usually began with developing multiple cover designs (typically around six) for the executive branch to review and decide upon. Subsequently, engineering typically provided their specifications before year-end. I always aimed to have the core content of the catalog finalized for early-year production. Unfortunately, this timeline was often unattainable, despite my best efforts. Design-wise, the catalog always straddled the line between an industrial manual and a visually appealing catalog. I made it clear to the executive branch that including images of every individual o-ring size was impractical. To me, the design represented a hybrid approach, combining the functionality of an industrial catalog with visually appealing elements. I implemented several improvements, such as organizing the catalog into sections with chapter pages for better organization and easy navigation. I also color-coordinated these sections and added the respective colors to the top corners of the pages. Additionally, I worked diligently to streamline the catalog by eliminating duplicate product listings. At one point, certain products were listed in the catalog 3-7 times. Once all the information was gathered and consolidated, I collaborated with the print company on paper stock selection and reviewed all proofs diligently. Despite my efforts, producing this catalog was often challenging. There were instances of inefficiency within the department, necessitating the digital marketing manager, the engineering department, and myself to shoulder the majority of the workload. The catalog frequently faced delays due to last-minute copy submissions from the copywriter, leading me to assume the role of copywriter in 99% of cases. The stylistic direction of the catalog was also a point of contention, with frequent changes in direction from the executive VP and the director of marketing, making my role as the sole professional creative a significant challenge. The idea behind the shop was to offer a space for the D.I.Y. mechanic to work on their car. What started as a D.I.Y. shop quickly turned into a race team, race support and rental service, which was completely outside the scope of the original business plan…thus my departure. He was in the midst of ordering custom skis from Parlor, a custom ski company based in East Boston. Knowing my passion for skiing and mountain biking, Baer entrusted me with this exciting endeavor. The goal was to create a race track-oriented design that seamlessly integrated his three brands.
